Law Clerk & Externship
Programs
The
Jefferson County District Attorney's Office offers two types of internship programs for law
students. Our Summer Law Clerk Program is open to rising 2Ls and 3Ls, and interviews for those
positions are typically conducted through the On-Campus Interview system facilitated by
participating law schools. The Summer Program is split into two six-week sessions with up to six
(6) law clerk spots per session: Session I is from mid-May to early July, and Session II is from
early July to mid-August. The first round of interviews for each summer is conducted in the
preceding fall, and we prioritize rising 3Ls for those interviews. A second round will occur in
the following spring semester, and any spots remaining for summer may be then filled by rising
2Ls. The Summer Law Clerk Program is a full-time (40 hours per week), unpaid position, and we
are happy to provide documentation for any public-interest stipends available to students
through their schools.
If a law student is interested in our Summer
Law Clerk Program and attends an out-of-state institution or a school that does not already
advertise our program as part of its On-Campus Interview process, please send a cover letter and
copy of your resume to Joe Hicks at hicksj@jccal.org.
Our office also participates in Externship
Programs with various law schools during the spring and fall semesters. If a law student's
institution offers course credit for time spent in an externship, we hold up to four (4) spots
each semester on a first-come, first-serve basis. Sign-up for the class and paperwork for an
externship should be done through the student's school and sent to Joe Hicks at hicksj@jccal.org sometime before the end of the semester
that precedes the one the student wishes to extern. Once the four (4) spots are filled, any
remaining interested applicants can be deferred to the next available semester.
Each extern will make his or her own weekly
schedule around their class times, calculated to fulfill the required amount of hours for their
externship class.
The Jefferson County District Attorney's
Office is committed to allowing law students to work closely with our Deputy District Attorneys
through both of these programs. Duties of both law clerks and externs include preparing discovery
and trial exhibits, research and memo writing, and attending and assisting with all types of
criminal court proceedings. Rising 3Ls are encouraged to apply for and obtain their 3L practice
card so they can conduct various hearings and bench trials under the supervision of a Deputy
District Attorney.
Unfortunately, our office does not
accept undergraduate students in either program. If an undergraduate student wishes to shadow
a Deputy District Attorney sometime during the semester, please contact Joe Hicks at hicksj@jccal.org.
